Why short notice crazy things have to show up on my doorstep on days when 24 hours just aren't enough anyway I will never understand - must be some cosmic thing that likes throwing people out of whack and into complete mayhem...
After our great show in Birmingham, Alabama last weekend, we had to restock lots of stuff in the gallery for this weekend's "monster show": the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival. I haven't seen my kitchen table for two weeks now, and walking in the house was near impossible for the last few days, due to boxes of mats, bags, labels, flyers, cards, kids, cats, laundry and whatnot...just as light was dawning at the end of the tunnel, since I was just finishing up getting all the shopping bags ready for this weekend, I realized it's not dawn coming, but a train at the end of the tracks: the sheep shearers from Australia called, and would come by the same evening (the evening before the storm of packing suitcases, doing last minute laundry, informing neighbors, emptying trash bins, etc.)
Then again, they only come around once a year, and the wooly creatures are getting awfully heavy, so shearing is a good thing (plus, Mom and I are out of things to spin).
To make sure chaos is limited, I caught four of the five sheep in the pen - and of course, one of them was stubborn and decided to pretend to be a cat instead. Sheep don't usually break from their flock, unless they are ill or chased - this one was both, as it turned out.
Flystrike is nothing funny at all - quite a nasty thing, in fact...however, because Bill, Jan and Ned are such great people, the sheep was actually doing remarkably well only a few minutes after treatment (one of which included having her tail docked - it's a bit late, but the alternative is really not pretty - so she'll be allright, we think)
Here are some pix of the nudist camp inhabitants - they really look a lot cuter this time around - maybe their ears are bigger, or they are just sillier than last year...at any rate, it was again a fun, pleasant and stressless affair, that makes the sheep a happy little flock.
