Probably the most requested painting over the past two years of Sheep Incognito has been a black sheep of the family. As many of you know, I don't do commission work, simply because it's hard to meet other minds' expectations without disappointing or misinterpreting them.

So to avoid further confrontational inquiries about the when, how and why not's, I've broken down and painted "The Black Sheep of the Family" for all those out there that deal with rebels, oddballs, and the occasional breakaway from the family -and for those people that ARE the rebels, oddballs, and occasional breakaways from normal. For this painting, I'm sure most of my patrons would have expected it a bit different - with the typical black sheep in the middle, the white sheep staring at it. I've decided a long time ago that being the black sheep of the family is not neccessarily a baaaad thing - in fact, just recently I read that actually, the wool from black sheep is more highly priced than that of their whitish flock-buddies.

Of course, since we're talking about my sheep, their interpretation is a different one entirely, that has less to do with money, and a lot more to do with how we perceive sheep or sheeple of a different color - what defines the rebel within? Is it the color of the fleece? Or the butterfly whispering in it's ear? Or is it the fact that  he's facing the other way - which of course raises the question: which way is the right way? Do more tails wag correcter than one in a different color facing the opposite direction?

Of course, we can also add a bit of flourishing thoughts to all this:

though the opposing sheep is on it's own, it just happens to be the only one that can see the approaching storm.  Or: though each sheep has a different view, they all have a certain degree of hindsight, each with a different view of the affair.

Whatever your interpretation or hindsight - it's clear: black or white; all sheep have their view of the meadow that will differ from the others' views, and none of them can say their view is the best without turning around to see what the other sheep is seeing...

Sheesh - now I won't be able to sleep tonight - I'll be pondering all night long....

Of course, if you have other interpretations, I'd love to hear them...
